The park is open year-round. May to September is the best time for hiking the RMK trails, exploring the manors, and visiting the coastal villages. Summer temperatures can still be cool on the coast, so layered clothing is recommended.

Winter offers a different experience, popular for snowshoeing in the bogs and viewing frozen waterfalls. Note that daylight hours are short in winter, and some manor facilities may have reduced hours.

Packing for the park

Weather on the northern Estonian coast can change rapidly. Always pack a windproof and waterproof jacket, even in summer, as sea breezes are cool. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are highly recommended for uneven forest paths and occasionally wet bog boardwalks. If visiting in summer, mosquito and tick repellent is essential.

Rules and etiquette

Lahemaa is a protected nature reserve. Stick to the marked RMK trails and boardwalks to protect fragile ecosystems. Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. Camping and campfires are only permitted in designated RMK sites, and open fires are strictly banned during high fire risk periods. Leave no trace and take your trash with you.

Planning questions

How much time do I need?

You need a full day (at least 6-8 hours) to properly experience Lahemaa, especially if traveling from Tallinn. Driving between the different sites (bogs, manors, coast) takes time. If you only want to hike Viru Bog, 3-4 hours including transit from Tallinn is sufficient.

Do you need a car to visit Lahemaa?

Renting a car is the most practical way to explore independently, as the attractions are spread out over 747 sq km. Public buses run from Tallinn to stops like Loksa (near Viru Bog), but local bus connections between coastal villages are very limited. If you don't have a car, a guided tour is the best option.

Is there cell service in the park?

Cell service is generally good near the villages and highways, but it can become spotty or drop out entirely in the deep forests and on remote trails. It is highly recommended to download offline maps (Google Maps or the RMK app) before your visit.
